The trick to maximizing your outdoor lifestyle is enough shade during the hot temperatures of daytime so no one is in the sun, and some extra warmth, from a fire pit or a heater in the evening to keep the evening’s chill at bay. It's funny, on a hot day you’ll watch your guests chase shade wherever it is – be it under a tree, or under umbrellas you’ve thoughtfully provided. Traditional market umbrellas have wooden frames and typically are octagonal or square in shape. Normally, market umbrellas also have wood hubs – the part of the umbrella that encircles the mast and where the umbrella ribs radiate outward from. Many different wood species are used to make wood market umbrellas. Teak market umbrellas have frames of teak, which is one of the most rot-resistant and strong wood species available.
We also see bamboo, acacia, and alder also used. Umbrella frames in woods known for their strength and imperviousness to rot (such as teak) do not depend on coatings and finishes on the wood frame for durability – the durability comes from the wood species. When evaluating market umbrellas, look at the ease with which you will be able to change out a broken rib, it happens.
Market Umbrellas come in a few different configurations:
- Center-Mast Umbrella–your typical patio umbrella with the mast in the center of the canopy
- Different Canopy Shapes: Octagonal, Hexagonal, Square, Rectangular, and freeform
All market umbrellas need some type of Umbrella Base to hold them in place. Umbrella Bases come in many different styles and shapes. Some have wheels and are very portable. Others, like under a dining table, don’t need wheels because they will rarely be moved. In some cases, the Umbrella Base is a standalone item, manufactured with only incidental thought to the umbrella that might be placed into it.
In other cases, the umbrella and the base have been engineered to work together as a system; in these cases, the function of the base depends on the correct umbrella being used in it for the whole shade solution to work correctly. Then there are the in-ground solutions that allow for secure anchoring of the umbrella without the tripping hazard of an umbrella base. These types of systems are especially popular for wineries, restaurants, swim clubs, and other locations where the bulk and unsightliness of a large umbrella base are to be eliminated.
Frequently you’ll want to put your market umbrella into the hole in the center of the table. This is a time you need to pay attention to whether the umbrella will operate properly in the table. Sometimes (especially on larger umbrellas), the ribs may be too long for them to clear the patio table top without hitting. TUUCI has planned for this – in some of their larger sized umbrellas, the mast rises as the umbrella is closed, lifting the ribs well clear of the tabletop. It's ingenious!
