It's sometimes a challenge getting an outdoor fireplace through your municipality’s permitting department. The building departments typically won’t allow something that a wood fire could be conceivably burned inside of, so it will need to be specifically engineered as a gas fireplace, or if a bespoke masonry structure, may require a gas insert be put into it. If you are lucky enough to have an existing wood burner in place, it’s an easy matter to add a gas logset into it that can be ignited with the flip of a switch or long-handled lighter.

Many hearth companies make fireplaces that are specifically designed to be used outdoors. What makes them different? Look for stainless steel burner components and parts specifically made for outdoor environments. Different from indoors, most municipalities will allow non-vented hearth products if they are in a well-ventilated outdoor space. Non vented fireplaces throw more heat into the space than vented ones but typically cost more.
