There are a number of recycled materials currently being used to manufacture sustainable outdoor furniture choices:
- Teak– is made from trees, but only plantation-grown trees in Indonesia, not from forests. Plantation teak when harvested is then replanted to continue a sustainable cycle and eco-friendly supply of teak wood. Teak wood is naturally pest-resistant, which means that pesticides and chemicals are not used in it's growth cycle making it an eco-friendly wood source. Also, keep in mind that teak is one of the top marine wood choices for boat decks and railings because it retains it's beauty with both moisture and harsh conditions. Warm to touch, it’s one of the earliest materials used in furniture making, and can be carved and shaped beautifully.
- Bamboo – grows in both temperate and tropical climates, it's an incredibly adaptable plant. Bamboo is tough like wood, but it grows incredibly fast compared to wood–up to 35 inches per day and 1.5 inches per hour. Bamboo needs very little water and doesn't require pesticides or fertilizers to grow. Bamboo is a sustainable choice since bamboo self-regenerates from its own root system, so no replanting is required.
- Recycled Plastic – eco-friendly plastics refer to a group of engineered polymers designed to break down or be recycled in a circular fashion. Some of our manufacturers engineer their outdoor furniture materials from recycling post-consumer plastics.
- Recycled and Virgin Synthetic/Polymer– typically made from a mix of recycled beverage bottles and virgin material.
- Recycled Aluminum – is an infinitely recyclable material, and it takes up to 95 percent less energy to recycle aluminum than to produce primary aluminum and many of our manufacturers use recycled aluminum in their outdoor furniture producing a sustainable outdoor furnishing product.
- Reclaimed or Recycled Teak – the source for reclaimed or recycled teak is from old or abandoned structures in Indonesia. This wood is generally from old forests and has stood the test of time in structures and is revered by outdoor furniture manufacturers and buyers too. The grain and look of recycled teak is well known and since teak is extremely resistant to pests the wood is well preserved.

The teak used in Barlow Tyrie garden furniture is FLEGT licensed and is fully sustainable to abide by Indonesian forestry laws. As an estimate, for every 1 tree cut down, another 5 trees are planted on the plantation to replace them. POLYWOOD
POLYWOOD furniture is good for the earth and built to last! Genuine POLYWOOD lumber is made from high-density polyethylene, HDPE, a durable and infinitely recyclable plastic and is widely used to make milk jugs, laundry detergent containers, bottle caps, and more. HDPE is ultra-durable, weatherproof, and easy to clean—the perfect for outdoor furniture material. POLYWOOD products are manufactured in the USA at their on-site recycling facility.
Kingsley Bate
Kingsley Bate sees preservation of the Earth's ecological system as today's major concern. In 1983 Kingsley Bate, in conjunction with the Indonesian government and its people, undertook the development of a teak furniture program in Java. Since then, Indonesia and Kingsley Bate have shown that such a program can be implemented without detriment to natural resources. Kingsley Bate is known for their craftsmanship and quality since they use only premium quality teak and precise mortise and tenon joinery in the construction of their furniture.
MAMAGREEN
MAMAGREEN furniture is manufactured using a majority of recycled or recyclable materials. More than 90% of the teak is carefully sourced from abandoned buildings, with the remainder coming from sustainably harvested teak. This ensures that the same plot of forest is not touched again before thirty years have passed, allowing new batches of mature Ipe trees to grow, contributing to forest diversity. Fermob
Fermob furniture is designed for natural environments and is made using materials and processes that respect the environment. The powder paints used by Fermob contain no solvents. They are 100% recycled and recyclable. They are applied in a zero-waste facility, with multiple successive steps for guaranteed outdoor use. Most Fermob products are made of steel or aluminum and 98% of all iron and aluminum is now recycled worldwide. Fermob is an environmentally friendly source for outdoor furniture and they use ecological paint that protects both the environment and your health, while using recycled fabrics, and recycled and recyclable packaging to deliver their products. Loll Designs
All Loll outdoor furniture is made with recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE), one of the most commonly used plastics in the U.S. because of its longevity, durability and lack of maintenance.
