Incredible Outdoor Barstool & High Dining Selection
Create A Bistro Dining Experience In Your Backyard
Bring your balcony dining experience outdoors! ‘High Dining’ is a euphemism for any outdoor dining sets which are taller than standard dining height, 29.5”. Typically, High Dining describes 2 heights:
- Counter Height (to suit a kitchen counter height tabletop – 36” with divider height="30"
- Bar Height – to suit a tabletop height of 42”
If you have a contractor creating a BBQ island for your backyard that will have an eating area built into it, it pays to verify the proposed height of the dining countertop. It needs to be an inch in either direction of 36” or 42” in tabletop height. Anything else and you will be needing custom-made chairs at 4X the price of a normal high dining chair or outdoor barstool. We can’t tell you how many times we’ve had to assist folks with solving this problem. There’s no inexpensive way to fix it! Much better to head it off at the pass by telling your contractor what the height needs to be.
High dining is frequently used on a deck or balcony. Why? The railings! If the balcony or deck was built according to standard building codes, then its required railing will be exactly at eye-level when sitting at a chair at standard dining height, think tabletop: 29.5”. Taller outdoor dining sets get your line of vision up and over the railing, so those beautiful views are not blocked. Any high dining set worth its salt also has a footrest on the chair so your feet are supported.
Seating around a high dining table is either stationary or it swivels. Stationary outdoor barstools have a cleaner look. Keep this in mind, however: at normal dining height, you simply push the chair back and maybe turn it to get up and out. That is not so easily done if your feet don’t reach the floor, as in an outdoor barstool or outdoor bar chair. Hence the swivel – makes it much easier to get up!
Barstools typically have no back or a lower back than a standard chair. It’s a stylistic thing – a normal high-back chair at bar height would be ponderous, even if it was more comfortable. While a simple backless barstool is stylistically very clean, if you want to be comfortable in the chair for more than 15 minutes, it should have a back – or at the least a wall to rest against. Unless you do yoga every day, recommended, you’ll want a seat with a back to support you.
