Inexpensive outdoor benches are cheap for many reasons: poor joinery, wood species not suitable for outdoor use, non-kiln dried wood, will crack, insufficient UV inhibitors. Avoid wood benches that depend on an intact coat of paint to allow them to withstand the outdoors. Choose a wood species known to be rot and insect resistant, such as teak, ipe, or cedar for a wood bench, redwood splinters. Recycled polymer or wicker benches should have aluminum frames with circumference welds and powder-coat.
