Transform Your Backyard Into an Outdoor Escape

You step out of the pool, heart racing from the laps you’ve swum. Nothing like a little snooze under the umbrella in a comfy chaise lounge. Your body tingling, you collapse into your chaise lounge, rolling up a towel under your neck. The birds are chirping. You catch a quick catnap, and soon wake up - refreshed and invigorated.

Chaise lounges are the natural accompaniment to a swimming pool deck, or IN the pool on a Baja Deck. Typically arranged in multiples of two, chaise lounges provide the consummate place to relax poolside with a beverage and a good book, dipping in and out of the pool. Chaise lounges come in a variety of materials:

  • Sling – a layer of non-absorbent mesh fabric that you lie on. Dries very quickly the sun.
  • Padded Sling – A sandwich of a) Sling or Fabric B) a thin layer of foam cushioning. A little cushier than a plain sling chaise.
  • Cushioned – A standard cushion or pad from 1-6” in thickness. These chaises with thick cushions are so comfortable!
  • Minimalist vibe – no pad at all.

Chaise lounges typically are arranged with a side table within reach to put sunglasses, a beverage, book, etc. Side tables alongside a chaise lounge are typically round, octagonal, or square, and usually around 14-20” tall. All chaises are not the same height – so make sure that the height of the side table feels natural to you as you lie in the chaise lounge. Note that not all chaise lounges lie completely flat when fully reclined. If a lie-flat bed is important to you, don’t assume that it does until you check or ask.

Patio chaises are made in many different styles and in many different materials. The traditional chaise lounge is the single chaise with an aluminum frame and a mesh sling. Chaises also come as double chaises for 2 people to lie on together – normally with separate headrests in case one person wants to sit up while the other snoozes. Chaises can also be a part of a sectional set to act as a chair + ottoman in one assembly. There are also armless cushioned chaises which lie flat – these can be abutted to each other to create a large daybed for the whole family. If the chaise is heavy, it should have wheels in the back to make it easier to move.

As well as aluminum/sling chaises, you might like a wood chaise lounge, such as one from teak or ipe. These typically need a cushion pad to make them comfortable. There are also chaise lounges with woven frames or made from recycled polymer. These normally need a cushion as well, although some do offer cushion-less sling surfaces.

Relax in Your Private Oasis

Chaise lounges are one place you really get what you pay for. Since they typically live near water, swimming pool, dock, lake, ocean, they should be able to take bathers lying on them wet. If metal, look for powder-coat finishes. If near saltwater, including saltwater swimming pools, stainless steel would get the nod. Make sure cushions are Sunbrella or other solution-dyed acrylic. Reticulated foam is a good choice when cushions will be getting wet – water isn’t absorbed, but runs right through them. If in a saltwater environment, it’s a good idea to rinse the furniture with clear water whenever possible.

Our outdoor chaise lounges also are a wonderful addition to other areas of your outdoor hardscape. Anywhere you might want a snooze, a chaise lounge is just the thing. They can also be used in your sunroom or family room to create a hard-working addition to the ensemble. Finish it all with a smart outdoor rug to ground it all – they feel so nice on your bare feet!
